On May 29, 2025, the tranquil community of Mokwa in Niger State, Nigeria, was plunged into devastation. A powerful flood, triggered by days of relentless rainfall and dam failure, claimed over 200 lives, left more than 500 missing, and displaced thousands. Entire families were swept away. Homes, schools, farms everything gone in a flash.
This was not just a natural disaster, it was a human catastrophe.

Adamu Yusuf, a local teacher, watched helplessly as the floodwaters took his wife, newborn baby, and seven relatives.
“I lost them all… I lost everything,” he said. His grief is shared by many in Mokwa (source).
Hundreds of boys attending local almajiri schools were left orphaned. Education, family, and future, gone with the water.
